In 2004, Chris Ruffle planted a vineyard on the granite slopes of Qiushan valley. He was followed in 2010 by Baron Rothschild, who established Lafite’s first ever vineyard in Asia as his neighbour. Qiushan, named after the famous Taoist monk Qiu Chuji whose temple lies in the vineyard, is on the North coast of the Shandong peninsula, the first mountain in from the sea. With a latitude of 37.6 degrees North, the area has plenty of sunshine. Fast draining soils and the marine influence protect the vineyard from excess rain and winter cold. Treaty Port vineyards, named after the nearby Treaty Ports of Chefoo (Yantai) and Dengzhou (Penglai), uses the latest Australian low-temperature fermentation techniques. All grapes are hand-harvested between September and early November. The 18ha (270mu) vineyard boasts 12 grape varietals and produces, on average, between 65 tons and 80 tons of grapes each year. The red, white and rose wine made from these grapes is designed to be fruity with low tannin, to accompany Chinese cuisine and suit Chinese tastes.
